The best approach is to buy from local coffee roasters. Most work directly with farms or reputable brokers, so they will be able to tell you exactly where their beans are sourced from, how they were produced, and whether they are organic.
You can choose from midnight (extra dark) roast, dark roast, medium roast, light roast, and espresso roasts in whole bean or ground varieties. The company also offers dark and medium roast choices in pods and organic decaf coffee, plus two specialty flavors, French vanilla and Highlander Grogg.
Like all Kicking Horse coffees, Grizzly Claw is a certified organic, fair-trade, kosher, and gluten-free product. The beans are sourced from Central and South America, with the roasting process handled in the Rocky Mountains where the coffee (whole bean or ground) is vacuum-packed for shipment.
The organically-grown, single-origin, Arabica beans are sourced from a part of southern Ethiopia known for its fruity, floral, complex taste profiles with bright acidity. They grow at high altitudes in volcanic soil and are some of the best organic coffee beans that can be found in Africa.

For many years, there was no certified organic coffee coming out of Colombia. When we finally gained a consistent supply, it moved to our top sellers list and has not looked back. A testament to the gone-but-not-forgotten Juan Valdez campaign. And of course to our now consistent high quality supply.
You can also buy organic coffee online. Amazon has tons of retailers that sell organic coffee beans, including all of the highest-rated organic coffee beans above. More niche online retailers like Thrive Market, Misfit Market, and Brandless may carry organic coffee as well.
If this is a new concept to you, that may sound a little crazy. But I am sharing exactly what you need to look for, why you should even be concerned about it and (of course) the best mold and mycotoxin free coffee brands. And I have LOVED testing some of the top brands so I can share which ones my team and I think are the standouts.
Research shows that pesticides have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, cognitive problems and behavioral problems. And when you consider that coffee bean crops are one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world along with the fact that most of us are drinking AT LEAST one cup of coffee per day (if not more) then the need to choose organic becomes so much more obvious.
This is where things get a little confusing. So, even if you have picked an organic brand of coffee, there are still a few farming practices that will make the coffee even better. You want to look for coffee beans that have met the following criteria:
One more interesting note on caffeine in coffee is that the caffeine actually is protective when it comes to mold growing on the coffee and can inhibit its growth and development. So, as someone who has to drink decaf, it makes it even more important that I choose a brand that tests for mold and mycotoxins!
Once you have invested in an organic coffee, you want to get the most out of it. Meaning, you want the best flavor! So here are my tips and tricks I have picked up over the years to really ensure you are getting the most out of your coffee:
Certifications: USDA Organic, Specialty Grade, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Smithsonian Bird Friendly, Demeter Biodynamic Certified, beyond Fair Trade (typically they pay 3X or more for their coffee than the average Fair Trade coffee due to its superior quality)
Mold Testing and Lab Results: Available on their website. Each batch of coffee beans is tested multiple times throughout the supply chain. When I emailed, I was given their most recent testing available.
About the Brand: Peak Performance was founded after its owner suffered from pain and inflammation throughout his body. He realized what he put in his body actually mattered and he put the focus of his brand on 3rd party testing his high quality products that are whole foods based and organic whenever possible. Peak Performance not only has high quality coffee but also supplements, protein powders, etc.
Mold Testing and Lab Results: Per Kion, their coffee is 3rd party tested for and free of mold and mycotoxins and highest in antioxidant levels of any other coffee on the market. However, they do not share the testing results publicly.
Suzi: I had tried Kion coffee a year or so ago and knew I liked it but wanted to try it again to really compare flavors. I got their decaf of course. I really like how smooth it is and strong for a decaf. It still has a little more acidic flavor though compared to the smoothness and richness of the Purity Decaf. However, if I just had this anywhere I would be really impressed!
Becky: The Kion Medium Roast was very smooth and balanced. It was similar to the Natural Force medium roast in my opinion, which I enjoyed both! I actually noted how fragrant this brand was (which I love). I made it in the morning and came back hours later and I could still smell the coffee aroma. That may not be for everyone, but I really liked it!
Fabula French Press: Strong flavor, with a bitter aftertaste. The bitter aftertaste was the only negative aspect of it. Again, my hubs drinks black coffee, so he likes it strong. It was definitely full bodied he said, which he loves. He said he would still prefer Purity coffee first though.
About the Brand:This is an instant coffee that has organic Ganoderma mushrooms in it. These mushrooms have a long history of promoting health and wellness in Asian countries. In Ganoderma mushrooms there are substances called triterpenes which have been described as anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumoral agents, as well as being immunomodulator compounds.

For perspective, conventionally grown coffee is one of the most chemically-treated beverages on the market. On top of being grown with large amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that can harm your health, these same chemicals often hurt both the coffee farmers and ecosystems that come in contact with them as well.
In developing countries like Colombia, Indonesia, and Brazil, where the majority of coffee is grown, there are few to no regulations on the chemicals and pesticides used, which means farmers can spray their crops with just about anything. In fact, some of the chemicals these farmers use are chemicals that have already been banned in America, Europe, and Japan due to their harmful effects on health.
